We have successfully made it through another week of 5th grade and we are now jumping into some 5th grade work. I can't wait to watch everyone grow!

Monday - Art

Tuesday - P.E.

Wednesday - Late Start

Thursday- Music & SEL

Friday - Media Center

Back to School Night

If you missed Back to School Night please ask your child for the paperwork if you have not already seen it. The first few pages were permission slips and sign ups. If you'd like to volunteer in the classroom, here is a link to the forms that must be filled out. Here is the slideshow I used for BTSN, and as always please email kgriffith@stjoebears.com if you have any questions or concerns.

Computers

All computers have been sent home this week. Students are expected to transport these in their backpacks in the black sleeve for protection. Computers must come to school fully charged each day as we will use them throughout the day.

Nightly Reading:  Student expectation for nightly reading will remain 30 minutes for the first trimester.  Students may read books online, magazines, newspapers, and of course print books.  The goal for nightly reading is to share their reading with an adult and discuss what they have read.

Friday Folders

This is the second week students received mail and completed work back. They should show you this in their Friday Folder. If you see this, please sign the form inside their folder for this week's date. LEAVE THIS FORM INSIDE THE FOLDER! I will check every Monday to see who has a parent signature and mark it accordingly. When they get 5 in a row they will earn a reward in class.

Reminders

  • Water bottle to school everyday

  • Bring a snack to eat (peanut free please)

  • Enter and Exit from door #6.

Switching
This past week we had our first round of switching classes and we will begin with content this coming week. Ms. Schermerhorn will teach our class Science, and Mrs. Briney-Kelm teaches Social Studies. We switch every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoon for 40 minutes each. Students will be taught Writing from me on Wednesdays and Fridays. Switching for these content areas is great practice for middle school when they will switch for all 6 hours of the day.

What are we learning in class this week?
Math- Volume of Rectangular Prisms
Reading- Informational Texts and Main Idea
Writing- Immersion Lessons
Spelling- Prefixes Dis, In, Un, and Mis
Science- Web of Life- Food Chains
Social Studies- Geography

Laps for Lincoln
Laps for Lincoln collections will happen again this week Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Students have an individual goal of $30, and can win a party if we are the highest earners for Upper El. Students can earn a necklace and charms for donating as well as for positive behavior in school. The actual event for Laps for Lincoln will be this Friday from 5-7 .
